You are walking calmly. Your dog is calm. Then it happens.
An off-leash dog comes running straight at you. Full speed. No owner in sight, or the owner shouting “He’s friendly!” from far away.
Your chest tightens. Your hand tightens on the leash. And your dog? He explodes. Barking, lunging, spinning. Reactive.
And in that second, you feel it: shame, anger, fear, guilt. All at once.
You are not a bad owner. You are not doing it wrong. What you felt is real, and what your dog did is normal — when nobody has shown you both a system for that moment.
Most people are told: “Just let them say hi” or “Pull your dog away” or “Shout at the other owner.”
None of that works. Because the problem is not the other dog. The problem is what happens in YOUR body, YOUR leash, and YOUR dog’s mind in those 3 seconds.
*What Really Happens In Those 3 Seconds*
1. *You see the dog first.* Your energy changes before you even speak. Your breathing stops.
2. *Your leash tightens.* Your dog feels that tension travel straight down the leash into his body. To him, that means: “Danger.”
3. *Your dog reacts first to protect you.* He is not being “naughty” or “aggressive.” He is trying to create space because you went silent.
This is why your dog is perfect at home, perfect on an empty street, but “reactive” when an off-leash dog appears. He is not reactive. He is unprepared for that moment, and so are you.
*What To Do Next Time – Fashionist Dog Whisperer System*
Next time, do not freeze. Do not pull. Do not shout.
Do this:
*1. Breathe out and step sideways.* Not backwards. Sideways. You break the straight-line charge. You show your dog you are still leading.
*2. Put your body between.* Calmly place yourself between your dog and the incoming dog. You become the wall. You are telling your dog: “I see it. I got it. You don’t need to fight.”
*3. Short, calm leash, no tension.* Hold the leash with a soft hand, close to your body. Not up high. Not yanking. Energy down.
*4. Let the other dog pass.* Most off-leash dogs just want information. When you don’t react, they lose interest in 5 seconds and move on.
When you do this, you will feel something you have never felt on a walk before: No friction. Your dog looks at you instead of exploding. That is instant proof.
*Why This Works When Everything Else Failed*
Because we are not training the dog to “ignore” other dogs. We are training YOU to stay regulated when the pressure comes.
Dogs do not listen to words. They listen to energy, timing, and leadership. When you stay calm in the worst moment — the off-leash charge — your dog learns: “My human can handle this. I don’t have to.”
That is self-regulation. That is the future of dog training. No punishment. No shouting. No shame. Just a system that works in real life, on a real street in Cape Town.
*You Don’t Have To Walk In Fear Anymore*
If this is your walk every day — Sea Point promenade, Newlands forest, your own street — and you are starting to avoid walks, avoid people, avoid life because of it, I can help you fix that.
In one session, I will show you exactly what to do in that off-leash moment, with your dog, on your street. You will walk away with proof, not theory.
